Kim Vo is a senior at Blaine High School and a full-time PSEO student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. She is also a third-year BPA member. BPA has given her the best memories with her friends and strong personal growth through her experiences. Outside of BPA, she enjoys reading books in her cozy living room, vlogging to treasure each memory, watching Netflix until 2am, and going on sunset walks with her friends. Kim spends her time volunteering at Southern Anoka Community Assistance where she forms personal relationships with seniors and people with disabilities in her community by delivering non-perishable items to them. She seeks to understand those around her to gain new perspectives and to form deeper, more meaningful connections to others. She uses this mindset daily and intends to apply it as a state officer. After high school, Kim is continuing her education in Finance and International Business. She plans to use her education to start her own chain of nonprofits to make a social impact by helping children in developing countries receive equal education.
Brandon Balma is a senior at Tri-City United High School, entering his fourth year as a BPA member. Brandon is involved in his school as the Senior Class President and Student Council President, along with being a wrestling and football captain as well as a member of ARTeam, World Empowerment Team, and the National Honor Society. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and eating out with his friends. During the winter, he volunteers his time as a youth wrestling coach and works to give back to his community. BPA has allowed Brandon the opportunity to develop his leadership skills, become an effective communicator, and find some of his closest friends. He is looking forward to leading the Minnesota BPA organization and meeting new members throughout the year. After his senior year, Brandon plans on majoring in Political Science and Economics.
Makenna Tysdal is a senior at Battle Lake High School and is in her fourth year of BPA. She is excited for this year in BPA and looking forward to helping Minnesota "Capitalize Their Future!" Through BPA, Makenna has gained so many important skills and has made so many lasting relationships. She wants to share those same opportunities with all members. Along with BPA, Makenna is also apart of the Minnesota Honor Society, Basketball, and Student Council. She also volunteers as a Blood Drive Coordinator through the Red Cross. Makenna loves to help others and give back to her community. She also loves being outdoors and spending quality time with her friends. Makenna will be attending Grand Canyon University next year to major in Marketing with a minor in Spanish. She hopes to one day work for a non-profit so she can continue to serve others and give back.
Maddy Sawyer is a senior at St. Michael-Albertville High School, and a three-year member of BPA. Within BPA Maddy currently serves as her chapter VP of Membership Outreach and served as her local chapter Historian last year. Outside of BPA Maddy remains busy as she is actively involved in Spanish club, captain’s council, Chinese club, she is also a freshman connections mentor and a leader on both the tennis and golf teams. Maddy’s favorite activities are BPA and golf because they allow her to connect and compete with people outside of her own High School. Maddy’s favorite part of BPA is meeting new members and being able to make memories with those who share her same passion for BPA. In her free time Maddy enjoys spending time with friends, golfing, and traveling to new places! Her after Highschool plans are to study Anthropology and play Division II golf at Bemidji State University.
Sujay Garlapati is a senior at East Ridge High School in Woodbury, MN. Asides from Business Professionals of America, he participates in tennis, National Honors Society, and volunteering. He helped East Ridge High School’s tennis team place 3rd in the State of Minnesota in 2016 and 2nd in 2017 and has been named captain of the team this year. He served as the secretary of East Ridge High School’s National Honors Society in his junior year and is currently the vice president of the club. He has volunteered over 330 hours at a local hospital in Woodbury, soup kitchens, and more. He works at the Minnesota Department of Transportation as an Intern in the Office of Land Management. In the past year, he started an online shoe resale company called Kinda Nice Shoes, which sell shoes of all kinds of functionalities (athletic, fashion, etc.), conditions (new and used), and price ranges on various online resale platforms.
Jake Ackerman is a senior at Blaine High School. There, he is always finding new ways to get involved. He sings in Blaine’s Chamber and Concert Choirs, is a three-year member of National Honor Society, and participates in Future Health Professions as well as Rock Climbing Club. Jake also serves on the student leader panel for Blaine’s Center for Engineering, Math, and Science. Outside of school, Jake fuels his caffeine addiction by working as a barista at Dunn Brothers Coffee. He also volunteers at Mercy Hospital, takes piano lessons, and enjoys getting outside to run. During his free time, you can find him out with friends, taking pictures, and exploring the Twin Cities. After high
school, Jake plans on pursuing a career in either the medical field or the non-profit industry where he will be able to combine his passions for science, business, and helping others. He is a three-year member of BPA, National Finalist, and proud officer of Blaine and Region Four. Jake is thrilled to be serving as a state officer for MNBPA this year and is working to create connections with members across Minnesota.
